At the Sign of the Whale is opening an exhibit this week entitled Under the Influence.
The exhibit, which runs Aug. 20 to Sept. 11, reveals some of the art that has influenced the gallery’s artists.
Each painting included in the exhibit will be accompanied by a reproduction of a painting that has been an influence to the artist and a description by the artist explaining the connection.
Influences are as diverse as HRH The Prince of Wales, the comic book creators Wallace Wood and Steve Ditko, Tom Thompson, Frida Kahlo, The French Impressionists, Paul Klee and a newspaper article.
Exhibitors include: Angelina Comeau, Bill Crowell, Cecil Day, Dan Earle, Bob Hainstock, Maurice LeBlanc, Lio Lo, V.L. MacLean, Roy Mandell, Isao Morrill, Brian Porter, Ruth Rideout, Twila Robar-DeCoste, Clive Roberts, Diane Castonguay Rosati, Robert Rutherford, Maggie Schmidt-Mandell, Virginia Stoddard and Anna Syperek.
The opening reception is Friday, Aug. 20 from 5-7:30 p.m.
At the Sign of the Whale’s gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, 9a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The gallery is located on Highway 1 in Dayton.
