The Yarmouth library has concluded its summer concert series and a library spokesperson says it was a successful season, prompting hopes of doing something similar – perhaps expanding on it – in the future.
The inaugural series began in late June and wrapped up in late August.
It consisted of weekly Thursday evening performances.
“It went very well,” said Yarmouth library coordinator Deborah Duke.
The nine-concert series drew 398 people all told for an average of 44 per show.
“(There was) a lot of positive feedback from people who said it was a really neat idea to have the concerts in the library,” Duke said. “They especially enjoyed it when we were outside, weather-permitting, but sometimes we had to have it inside and that worked out well too.”
It ended up being about a “half-and-half” mix of outdoor and indoor performances.
She said she was pleased with the series, both with regard to the people providing the music and the spectators who turned out to see and hear them in concert.
“It was very well received and we had some wonderful support from performers in the community who volunteered their time and were quite happy to do so, so it was really quite nice,” Duke said.
Her connection to a local musical group helped her find performers for the series.
“Since I’m involved with the Yarmouth Community Chorale, I had some contacts there with people and got some suggestions of names and started from there and got more names,” she said.
The series also served as a fundraiser for the library, with over $1,000 received from donations.
Looking ahead, Duke says the library would like to follow up on this year’s series, possibly making the next one a little longer.
“We have thought about maybe next summer extending it into September or even starting earlier in June because it was so well received,” she said. “A lot of people said they wished it would continue.”
