Forget the waistline, you can eat your fill of chocolate on Feb. 10, knowing the $10 you spent for this event is going towards a very good cause.

The VON Chocolate Lunch has been held for more than five years. You can catch it this year at the Yarmouth Lions Club hall on Parade Street.

Rappie pie, a roll, beverage, and as many chocolate-based desserts as your eyes and belly can handle can be savoured in exchange for your ticket.

Derrick Babin, coordinator of community support and volunteer services for VON Tri-County, says they have people calling about the event each year before the tickets have even been printed. He says the sell-out lunch isn’t just about the good eats and fundraising, though.

“It’s important in several ways. It’s very social in nature. People are coming out in the middle of winter, they’re meeting friends; you see a lot of smiles. It’s more than just about raising money. It’s about people connecting with old friends and meeting new ones,” he said.

Funds are used for community support programs, including the adult day program, volunteer visiting and caregiver programs.

“We find that we’re working more with caretakers,” said Babin.

“As people age in their homes, they’re being looked after more and more by their family. Those people need support as well, so we’re offering them education opportunities as well as support groups.”

VON is encouraging people to buy tickets in advance. Although oftentimes it does sell out, people can check at the door to see about availability. Three seatings are offered: 11 to noon, noon to 1 p.m., and 1 to 2 p.m.

Visa purchases are encouraged via phone as well as group orders to be delivered to local businesses.

Tickets are available at the VON office at 55 Starrs Rd. (902-742-4512).
