Making police cars, meeting real police detectives and creating police dog puppets are all part of the early July Summer Reading Club programs at the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Library in Yarmouth.
On Thursday, July 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., children ages three to six can cut out and colour their own 3-D police cruiser. Space limited so register by Tuesday, June 30 by calling the branch at 902-742-5040 or e-mailing yarmouth@nsy.library.ns.ca. Include the event name in the e-mail subject line and your name and phone number.
That same day from 2 to 3 p.m. those ages seven to 12 can meet a real detective. Cpl. Dana Parsons of the RCMP Major Crime Unit will talk about police work. Topics will include looking for clues, fingerprinting and carrying out his duties as a detective. Participants are asked to register by Tuesday, June 30.
In a bit of a twist, the library will host a GPS Amazing Race on Wednesday, July 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. This program for youth ages 11 to 16 is a two-hour introduction to the GPS handheld systems and geocaching. Space is limited; register by Tuesday, July 7.
Younger detectives can create their own dog stick puppet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 9. This program is for children ages three to six and participants are asked to register by Tuesday, July 7.
Youth ages seven to 12 can enter the world of the RCMP Canine Unit with Cpl. Mike Schaus starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 9. the dog will not be present, but Cpl. Schaus will discuss his work with the dog and how it fits in with police investigations. Register by July 7 for this program.
