Dwight d’Eon nodded in seemingly resignation as two of the judges predicted he would be one of the competitors leaving Canadian Idol Wednesday night.

After all, he was in the bottom four males and two nights earlier at least one of the judges had worried out loud that his song choice might not have been the best one to relate to the voting public.

But moments later he clasped his face with his hand, looking both shocked and relieved to learn he had made it through another round and would not be one of the two males sent home.

If he makes it past next week’s elimination round, the West Pubnico singer will find himself in the Top 10, where each week from there on in one singer will be sent home (the person who receives the lowest number of votes) until there is only one person, the next Canadian Idol, left standing.

A guaranteed recording contract awaits that individual.

On Monday night d’Eon and the eight other remaining males had performed for the Canadian public. D’Eon dug into his rock roots and performed an I Mother Earth song, which solicited a good response from judge Zack Werner who called the 28-year-old “the first balls-to-the-wall pure Canadian rocker” the show has had.

Judge Jake Gold, on the other hand, said if he had been in d’Eon’s shoes – or boots – he would have chosen a different song. When asked Wednesday night prior to the results being announced who they thought would be heading home, both Gold and judge Farley Flex predicted it would be Dwight.

There is no limitation to how many votes any one person can cast for their favourites on Canadian Idol. Unlike elections this isn’t a one person-one vote system. If you follow d’Eon’s fans on Facebook, many are casting hundreds of votes each.

And after seeing their favourite in the bottom four Wednesday night they are urging more people to cast more votes. No one wants to see d’Eon in next week’s bottom vote getters. “Whew! I thought I was gonna throw up there for a minute,” was one person’s reaction to having to wait to find out in d’Eon was safe for at least another week.

Other d’Eon followers are bemoaning the difficulty some have had getting through the phone lines. The high volume of calls is stressing the phone system when voting opens on Monday nights after the guys perform. People on Facebook are suggesting that d'Eon supporters spread out to other communities and other telephone exchanges on calling nights to better their chances of getting their maximum number of votes through.

D’Eon is one of two Nova Scotians left in the competition. Like d’Eon Tyler Mullendore of Cape Breton will be among the Top 7 males to perform Monday night. Naomi-Joy Blackhall of Halifax was one of the two girls voted off during this week’s results show. Also voted off the show this week were Scarlett Burke, Clifton Murray and Andrew Austin.

NOTE: The Yarmouth Vanguard will carry an extensive interview with Dwight d'Eon in its Tuesday, July 10 issue.
