It’s on to the top six for West Pubnico’s Dwight d’Eon, who learned Tuesday night that he is one of the half-dozen competitors still in the running to become the next Canadian Idol.

Dropped from the group of seven finalists, based on voting results from the previous evening’s performance show, was Greg Neufeld, the 23-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C.

D’Eon’s place in the top six was assured when it was revealed he was not among the three lowest vote-getters.

Instead the bottom three consisted of Neufeld, Brian Melo, the 24-year-old from Hamilton, and Carly Rae Jepsen, the 21-year-old from Mission, B.C.

When Jepsen was declared safe for another week, it came down to Neufeld and Melo and it’s the former who ended up on the short end of the vote count, a result that prompted Idol host Ben Mulroney to say, “Canada got this wrong. I don’t care if I’m not supposed to say that. Canada got this wrong. Anyone watching our show should know. If they don’t know, I’m telling them. You (Neufeld) are a bona fide star.”

Tuesday’s results show included the top seven finalists teaming up to sing a couple of songs by Queen – whose music was the theme for the week – You’re My Best Friend and We Will Rock You.

The finalists shared the stage on the latter number with Yvan Pedneault, one of the lead performers in the production We Will Rock You, a show based on the music of Queen.

The program also showed the Idol finalists attending the We Will Rock You production and TV viewers also got to see them on stage with the production’s cast members – and Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor – singing The Show Must Go On.

Meanwhile, the show will go on for Dwight d’Eon and the five other remaining finalists, with the next performance show to air Monday, Aug. 13, on CTV and the voting results to be announced the following night. “Pop rock” is next week’s theme and Maroon 5 will be the special musical guest.
