James Gordon is one of Canada's most accomplished songwriters, and is renowned for his songs about social justice, heritage and environmental issues.

His classic Frobisher Bay has been recorded and performed by hundreds of acts worldwide, and was an audition piece for CTV’s Canadian Idol.

His song Mining for Gold was featured on the Cowboy Junkies' landmark album, The Trinity Sessions, and was heard in John Sayles' motion picture Silver City.  His tune Harvest Train, about Nova Scotians who went looking for work during the building of the CPR, was recorded by Halifax native Melanie Doane on her first album.

Gordon has made countless appearances on television and radio, and was a resident songwriter on CBC radio for 12 years, with weekly songs on shows, including Basic Black.

His Rhyme Capsules songwriting-in-the-schools program develops young writers all across North America. He tours as a solo performer and with his sons, and has released over 30 albums as a solo artist or with the legendary folk trio Tamarack. In 2009 BerLen Music published the Pipe Street Songbook, an anthology of his 50 most loved songs. Between tours, Gordon is a record producer, playwright, community activist and theatre director.

Gordon will be performing in Southwest Nova, with sons Evan and Geordie, for the first time. The trio has become well known in the indie-rock world as multi-instrumentalists, using tools such as guitar, banjo, bass, fiddle, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, electric guitar and keyboard.

His two children’s CDs have become family classics, and his Bouncy Bouncy album was certified gold in Canada.

Tickets for the Friday performance and the separate children’s concert are available in advance at the Yarmouth County Museum, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, 2 – 5 p.m.

For the evening concert, tickets are $15 for society members and $20 for non-members. The children’s concert is $10 per family. Seating is limited to 50 persons for each performance.

The Yarmouth County Museum is the second largest community museum in Nova Scotia with over 20,000 artifacts on display.

Intimate concerts are frequently staged in the museum’s education wing at 22 Collins St. For more information, contact Bruce Bishop, director at (902) 742-5539 or ycmuseum@eastlink.ca.
