In a summer when local festivals and events mean more than ever, the town is taking steps to help organizers maximize their potential.
Meagan D’Eon is working for the town this summer as an events liaison. She’s tasked with assisting people in putting the finishing touches on any planning or preparations they might have for events this summer.
D’Eon, a French and history major at Dalhouise University, said she’s already seeing demand for her services in areas such as volunteer and sponsor recruitment. She’s met with representatives from Seafest, the Parade of Lights and Yarmouth Recreation.
“A lot of people work throughout the week so they don’t have time to make all these different calls and that’s what I’m here for,” she said.
Mayor Phil Mooney said the town feels it’s important to have someone such as D’Eon filling such a role. Plans for a full-time events coordinator have been in the works for some time. Mooney said he expects to be able to make an announcement about that position within the next month.
In the meantime, people organizing events who need an extra hand finding resources or in other areas can contact D’Eon. That said, the mayor made a point of adding that D’Eon’s job isn’t to work as a volunteer at various events or to run events.
“Megan is here to assist any event,” he said. “She’s not here to barbeque hotdogs or do the face painting or blow up the balloons, but she’s there to help people get the event up and running.”
“We needed somebody to help tide (things) over with the tourism season. We know all our volunteer groups are strapped for time (and) money. You look at some of the groups around here, some of the volunteers cross lines and are overworked.”
D’Eon is working at town hall until the end of August and can be reached at 742-1505, extension 237.
