The Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce presented its business awards last week, a yearly event where the chamber honours local business people for their achievements in various categories.

Vernon d’Eon of Vernon d’Eon Lobster Plugs Ltd. received the award for business person of the year.

The award for entrepreneur of the year went to Mathieu Muise of South West Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Inc.

Mike Mercier of Canadian Tire received the award for community service.

Dave Arenburg of Adcor Marketing (Tim Hortons) was presented with the environmental service award.

Lena Fevens of Goodies Bakery gets the award for youth entrepreneur of the year.

Scotia Harvest Seafoods Inc. (company president: Jean Guy d’Entremont) received the business marketing award.

Phil LeBlanc of IMO Foods was presented with the award for export achievement.

Brian Bowers and Scotty Boudreau of Pleasant Supplies received the customer service award for Pleasant Supplies Ltd.

The annual awards dinner gives the chamber a chance to recognize the accomplishments of local business people and entrepreneurs, said Anne Marie LeBlanc, the chamber’s executive director.

“It’s all about the business community,” she said. “The nominations come to us from their peers. The nominees live, work and maintain their businesses in the community and I can’t think of a greater honour and recognition than to be nominated by your peers.”

Over 250 seats were sold for this year’s awards dinner, she said, adding that although some people didn’t make it – a consequence of the evening’s stormy weather, she said – the dinner was a success in terms of focusing on businesses and business people who are doing positive things in the Yarmouth area.

“We were very pleased with the event,” she said. “We congratulate all the winners and all of the distinguished nominees. We thank our sponsors for their wonderful support.”

Nancy Aylward of NLA Training and Management Services in Halifax was the guest speaker for this year’s business awards dinner.

This was the chamber’s sixth business awards banquet.
