A Yarmouth grocery store will close its doors for the final time at the end of this week and its 32 employees will be out of work.

Price Chopper, which is owned by Sobeys, will close for good on Oct. 20. The grocery store is the last remaining part of the old K-Mart mall. Jill Thomas-Myrick, a spokeswoman for Sobeys, said it was a business decision to close the store. "It absolutely follows an extensive and careful review of our operations in Yarmouth area," she said.

The store's 32 employees included both part-time and full-time workers. The staff was informed of the decision at a meeting last week. One employee at the store said staff did not see the closure coming.

Thomas-Myrick said there is the possibility that some of the Price Chopper employees might be able to find work at the local Sobeys store. "We're working closely with our Sobeys store in Yarmouth to identify possible employment opportunities for the Price Chopper employees who may be interested in applying for a position there."

With the closure of this location, Sobeys now has eight Price Choppers in Nova Scotia. They leased the space in Yarmouth.
