Measures are now in place to move gas regulation to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB) for gas and diesel price setting, effective Oct. 1

During the last provincial election, the NDP made a commitment to move gas regulation to an arm's length body, to operate in an open and transparent process. "Our position has always been that the UARB is the proper body to perform this regulatory function," said Ramona Jennex, Minister of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations. "This measure is in keeping with gasoline regulation in other provinces."

After the transfer, the UARB will hold public hearings on gas regulation, border gas pricing, and other issues this fall or in early 2010.

The UARB regulates several areas affecting Nova Scotia consumers and businesses, including electricity, auto insurance, gaming, liquor licensing, assessment and expropriation, film classification and municipal and school board boundaries.
