“We’re collecting coats, mittens, hats, gloves, anything that’s either new or gently warn to help children or adults stay warm this winter,” she said.
The mitten tree project is receiving items through December at the Y. The donations will be distributed to Parents’ Place and the Salvation Army.
Although one might expect to see the tree laden with mittens and scarves, the generosity of the community creates a challenge that organizers are happy to cope with. Because of the size of the tree and the amount of donations, items are being placed in bags around the base.
“It’s called the mitten tree because it’s easier to say than the winter wear and accessories tree,” laughed Brown.
The need for these items is great, says Mitchell Caissie, a youth and community family services worker with the Salvation Army,
“So far we have 188 families that have approached us for this Christmas. Out of those there are 336 children, ages from one-week to 16 years. They don’t have sufficient clothing, food, toys, etc.,” he said.
The YMCA will be accepting clothing and toys or gifts Monday to Friday 6 a.m. – 9 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. -7 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.
