A fundraising event modeled after a popular show hosted by Art Linkletter raised close to $1,500 last week for three non-profit organizations.

The Kids Say the Darndest Things show at Th’YARC was organized by Jodi MacKinnon-LeBlanc, owner of Lil Jems Early Learning Childcare Centre and her staff member Jodee Penney.

“Our whole team strongly believes in supporting the community,” said MacKinnon-LeBlanc.

“We knew that Yarmouth Power Cheer needed to raise money for uniforms and our friend and former co-worker shared her interest in going to Kenya (Me to We mission) to help build schools and there is never enough money to pay for early childhood professional development, so this was the perfect opportunity to support them while doing something I love - working with kids,” she said.

The show featured several sets of half-a-dozen youngsters, sitting on high stools being quizzed by MacKinnon-LeBlanc.

Eight-year-old Natha Paquette surprised the audience with his astute summation of the government.

“The government is a group of people who are in charge of our nation, our society and our economy.”

When asked,”If you could do anything to change the government what would it be?” “To make it more transparent,” he said.

Sometimes the children’s answers were disturbingly honest: “I wish she wouldn’t use the computer or iPod so much,” was a common answer to, “what would you like to do to change your mother.”

If there could be one rule changed in the house, Colby King wouldn’t want to have to wash his hands before supper because he wants to eat his supper faster so he can use the day “better and longer.”

Sarah Iqbal told everyone what the silliest thing is that her dad does. “He gives me anything I want.”

MacKinnon-LeBlanc says the event will be held annually, with a few changes already planned.

“Next year we will cut down on the time and not ask the same questions to the kids on stage... the Chinese auction was perfect as well.”
