In 1994 a new local dance program for seniors was launched.

Over the years its members have assembled for weekly classes, performed at various events (festivals and the like) and taken part in different group activities.

More than a decade-and-a-half after it was established, the beat goes on for Seniors Kickin’ Country, which is about to start its 17th season.

The group is scheduled to kick off its 2010-11 campaign in a couple of weeks.

The season will begin Sept. 14 with a class for beginners at Beacon Church in Yarmouth, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The group’s opening week will continue the following day – Sept. 15 – with a regular class, also at Beacon Church, this session too going from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The first week of the new season is scheduled to conclude Sept. 16 with another regular class, this one at the Wedgeport fire hall. This class, like the first two, is set for 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The SKC season goes until June.

Activities throughout the year include a variety show and yard sale.

Special occasions for the group include Christmas and year-end parties.

“We go on a trip once a year,” said Dora Amirault, the group’s founder and instructor. “That’s in May. The last two years we’ve gone to Bangor.”

The group’s destination for 2011 has yet to be determined.

“We’re thinking of going back to Bangor, but we’re not sure,” Amirault said.

Membership in the program lately has been about 140. There is no registration fee.

Amirault welcomes inquiries from people who might like to join the group or who may want more details regarding what the program is like. She can be reached at 648-2024

More than just a dance group, Seniors Kickin’ Country has been billed over the years as a chance for participants to get out of the house, be active and get together with others.
