With the tender for the construction of the new Yarmouth high school set to close on June 10, the public will have an opportunity to see what the school will look like during a public session on May 27 from 7-9 p.m. The session is being held in the Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School gymnasium.

On Thursday night students, parents and other interested people will get to see the design of the new two-storey building.

The session is being hosted by the school steering committee of the new high school. The architects who designed the school ¬– with input from the school steering committee and the school board – and government department representatives will be on hand to answer questions about the new facility.

Originally the public was going to get its first glimpse of the high school in early April, but a public session that had been planned was postponed to allow for some tweaking of the plans. At the time the school board had expressed a safety concern with the way the bus loop had been designed.

The public session was advertised to be held at the school board offices, but at press time there was talk about moving the location to the high school gymnasium. (Check our website www.NovaNewsNow.com for an update on the location.)

The new high school was announced by the previous Progressive Conservative government in the spring of 2008. The tender for construction went out on May 19.

The goal is to hit a September 2011 target opening, although a spokesperson with the education department said last month a January 2012 opening might be more realistic.
