Nova Scotia Community College’s (NSCC) Burridge Campus celebrated its class of 2010 during a convocation ceremony at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre on Wednesday, June 9.
The graduation ceremony celebrated the achievements of 220 Burridge Campus graduates who earned diplomas and certificates in the last academic year. The ceremony was also an opportunity to reflect on the substantial impact NSCC graduates have on the province’s economy and quality of life.
This year’s Burridge Campus valedictorian was Jason Hill, a graduate of the automotive service and repair program.
“NSCC offered the best training to help me achieve my goal of working in the automotive field,” said Hill. “The combination of hands-on training and in-class theory provided the skills and knowledge I need to get started.”
Also speaking during the convocation were Don Bureaux, NSCC Acting President; Jeff Kline, NSCC Board of Governors and Mary Thompson, Burridge Campus Principal.
In addition to the diplomas and certificates that were handed out, the following major awards were also presented:
• Governor General’s Academic Medal awarded to the graduating student of a college diploma program who has achieved the highest academic standing. Recipient: Harold Crosby, information technology web development program.
• NSCC Board of Governor’s Award awarded to a graduating student of a college diploma program who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to campus and/or community activities. Recipient: Andrew Fraser, welding program.
• NSCC Foundation Award awarded to a graduating student of a college program (diploma or certificate) who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and whose service and leadership has made a difference in the lives of others. Recipient: Jason Hill, automotive service and repair program.
• NSCC Gold Medal awarded to a graduating student of a college certificate program who has achieved the highest academic standing. Recipient: Courtney Dulong, office administration program.
• President’s Award awarded to a graduating student of a college certificate program who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and contributed to campus and/or community activities. Recipient: Renee Hanf, office administration program.
Nova Scotia Community College offers more than 100 programs in five academic schools across 13 campuses. This year 4,500 students have earned a diploma or certificate.
According to information gathered last year, 86 per cent of NSCC graduates are employed and 83 per cent are employed in their field of study.
