Reason for SPCA dog theft unknown

By Carla Allen THE VANGUARD NovaNewsNow.com RCMP were called to investigate an unusual break and enter at the Yarmouth SPCA last Wednesday. Thieves jimmied a door on an outside chain-link kennel/run, crawled through the opening to inside, stole an empty cash box and took a dog two runs over from the one they broke in through. They left behind a mitten.

The dog, Chico, was found the next day on Chester Street and returned to the SPCA.

Chico, a solid-looking, all black pitbull/Labrador cross, was brought to the SPCA by the original owner last September when he/she could no longer care for the dog. The intact male is just under a year old.

He has the squarish head of a pitbull but is larger than a purebred and the completely black colour is unusual for that breed, observed shelter supervisor Beverly Pinkney.

There are several theories as to why the dog turned up so quickly after being stolen: that he was stolen for breeding purposes; and that the thief stole the wrong dog. “He’s not a valuable dog but it does seem to be that he was targeted. He’s scheduled to be neutered and his new family have been visiting him quite frequently,” said

Yarmouth SPCA president Frieda Perry. “Thankfully he’s back. That’s the main thing. We never leave any cash in the shelter. It’s taken out every day to avoid things like this,” said Perry.
