“We’re fun-loving people who like to do stupid things for good reasons,” said Stephen Swimm about the New Year’s Day event that takes place by the Lake Milo boat club at noon.
The event has been held for several years with funds raised directed towards the fire department. Fire department members are on hand to assist with breaking ice and ensuring the safety of the swimmers.
Last year $2,400 was raised. Swimm says the group hopes to surpass that amount this year.
“It’s not a whole lot of money but they can use it to buy some of the smaller things they need,’ he said.
Although dippers won’t be entering the water until noon, they are asked to be on site by 11:30, the deadline for registration. Each dipper is asked to bring a spotter.
Pledge sheets can be obtained at Boston Pizza and those who want to donate money can contact the restaurant (902-742-5697) to support a dipper.
