The Wedgeport Tuna Tournament Festival takes place Aug. 17-22. The following is a schedule of the events that are planned.
Monday, Aug. 17: Wine and cheese will be held at 7p.m. at the Wedgeport Tuna Museum. The 12 girls participating in the pageant will be present. Tickets $5 per person.
Tuesday, Aug. 18: Captain's send-off at 7 p.m. at the breakwater wharf. The teams will set sail to the fishing grounds – a 12-hour sail.
Wednesday, Aug. 19: Beginning at 6:30 p.m., kids’ night in the tent located behind the Wedgeport Tuna Museum. Lots of activities, Kidzact dance group will be performing, as well as She-la la luna the storyteller. The cost is a toonie per family. People can bring their own chairs to this event.
Thursday, Aug. 20: A junior fishing derby will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children up to 16 years old can participate. Registration takes place at the tuna museum. A parent or guardian must sign a release form.
Also on Aug. 20, the tuna tournament pageant will be held at 7 p.m. The event will feature musical entertainment from the 50's and the 60's, along with an array of young entertainers singing today's music. Cover charge of $5.
Friday, Aug. 21: Beer Garden with live entertainment, located in the tent in the back of the museum. Art Showcase will be held from 1-4 p.m. A lobster fest will take place from 4-7 p.m. There is a cover charge for the entertainment after 6:30 p.m. The evening entertainment lineup includes: 5-6:30 p.m. - Up & Coming; 7-8:30 p.m. – Cape Breton Fiddler Anna Ludlow; 9-10:30 p.m.- Fused for Tonight; 11 p.m-1:30 a.m. – local talent: Chicken Fried and the Ed Smith Project.
Various food booths will be available starting at 4 p.m. and will include BBQ sausages, hot dogs, burgers, steamed lobsters, mussels and clams.
Saturday, Aug. 22:
•10 a.m. – Weighing of the tuna
•12:30 p.m. – tuna auction
•1 p.m. – closing ceremonies
Various food booths will be available from 12 noon until 1 a.m. There will be a beer garden during the afternoon and evening. (Starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a cover charge.) The entertainment lineup will include: 3:30-5 p.m. Up and Coming; 5:15-7 p.m. Cross Border; 7-9 p.m. Simon and André; 9:30pm-1:30 a.m. The Swell Guys.
Free shuttle services will be available on Friday and Saturday, but only in the Wedgeport area. People may also bring their own chairs on Friday and Saturday.
