Courses at the Gates Computer Lab at the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Library in May will cover the basics of operating a computer to the use of handheld GPS systems. Listed below are the courses being offered beginning Tuesday, May 12:

Computer Basics

Tuesday, May 12, 2 to 4 p.m.

This two-hour course is about the basics of computers such as using the mouse and keyboard, opening and closing programs and multi-tasking. Register ahead of time.

Internet Basics

Wednesday, May 13, 2 to 4 p.m.

An introductory course to the Internet (World Wide Web): come in and learn how to “surf the Net.” Topics include navigating the Internet, an introduction to the Western Counties Regional Library Web site, and performing basic searches. Register ahead of time.

File Management Basics

Thursday, May 14, 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a two-hour session about the basics of file management. Topics covered will include how to create and save files, how to locate lost files, creating folders, moving files and folders and deleting files. Register ahead of time.

Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint

Tuesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 21, 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a two-part introductory course in Microsoft PowerPoint. Come learn how to create slideshow presentations. Topics will include creating slides, adding text/images, slide transitions, etc. Register ahead of time.

Introduction to Geocaching

Wednesday, May 27, 2 to 4 p.m.

This two-hour session introduces participants to the GPS handheld system, as well as the outdoor sport known as Geocaching. Time is spent split between inside instruction and outside hands-on use. (Proper footwear is recommended)

Introduction to Facebook

Friday, May 29, 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a two-hour session about the Internet Web site Facebook. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, share photos, links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet. Learn how to access and use this social networking site.
