The informal get together provided the opportunity for business owners, site managers, festival reps, and others to provide different perspectives on working together as a region to create, grow and expand on experiential tourism offerings to visitors.
Visitors are increasingly requesting engaging and experiential opportunities say industry spokespersons.
Some of the ideas that evolved out of the event include the development of wharves, “the heart of many communities” as destinations with retired fishermen on site to tell stories, teach skills, and explain the different boats and fisheries, etc. The integration of food and entertainment at the wharf was discussed, including lobster suppers on tied up boats with local musicians providing entertainment. Having someone available to explain when boats come in to unload fish was also suggested.
More lighting for downtown Yarmouth, food kiosks, outside bistros, and animators (perhaps rum runner actors), and week-long activities were also recommended.
Movable theatres with productions that tell the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores stories and closer partnerships and cross promotion were other suggestions.
More YAS Tourism Cafés are planned for 2010.
