Sheriff Chris Goudey says Yarmouth’s new justice centre is very secure, particularly when compared to its predecessor at 403 Main St.
“We’ve operated for years in a very non-secure facility where we have to take prisoners out of the backs of our vehicles into the general public and walk them into the building, there will be no more of that,” he says.
“We’ve got a secure sally port area. It’s a secure garage that we drive our vehicles, with the prisoners inside, into. Prisoners are not let out of that vehicle until the sally port door closes behind the vehicle.”
And unlike the old facility where prisoners were kept in the jury room, which didn’t even have a locked door, in the new facility there are holding cells.
Throughout the building there is also a locked door system that requires pass cards to deactivate.
“So the public’s safety, everyone’s safety, has been taken into account with this new building,” Goudey says.
