Silver Crosses were presented to four fathers of Canadian soldiers at the Mariners Centre on Saturday, May 9. All of their sons died while serving in Afghanistan.
Years ago the Maple Grove Memorial Club, along with the Yarmouth High Memorial Club, started presented the silver crosses to fathers who have lost their sons to the Afghan missions. The club decided to do something for the fathers, noting mothers receive a silver cross through a federal program.
The club has already given out three Silver Crosses in past years. Receiving Silver Crosses on Saturday, May 9 were David Green of Bridgewater, father of Private Richard Green; Dexter Megeney of Stellarton, father of Cpl. Kevin Megeney; Barry Mellish, father of Warrant Officer Frank Robert Mellish; and Robin Tedford of Upper Brookside, father of Sgt. Darcy Tedford.
In all, the families of eight fallen Canadian soldiers attended the event.
Also joining the families and Memorial Club members in attendance were veterans of various wars and conflicts, peacekeepers, dignitaries and the public.
The Silver Cross ceremony came one day after a monument was unveiled at Maple Grove Education Centre. The monument is dedicated to the men and women who have died while serving in the war in Afghanistan.
