Hurricane Earl will pound Southwest Nova then move on to other parts of the province according to an update issued by Environment Canada at 9 a.m. Friday. The Category 2 storm was about 135 km east of Cape Hatteras, N.C. early this morning.

Maximum wind gusts of 130 km/hr could reach Yarmouth, Shelburne, Digby, and Queens counties in addition to Halifax Metro, parts of Halifax county, and Lunenburg - beginning early Saturday morning. All of these areas have been issued a Hurricane Watch status. Other areas are under Tropical Storm Watch.

Heavy rain, amounting to 40 to 70 mm will likely fall over portions of the Maritimes on Saturday as Earl tracks across the region. Very heavy downpours are likely with as much as 25 mm or more possible in one hour.

Severe storm surge impacts are not anticipated since the tidal cycle is not extreme, however higher than normal water levels are possible. High waves and pounding surf can be expected along south and southeast facing coastlines.

Tonight's forecast calls for cloudy skies with rain at times heavy (20-30 mm). Wind becoming southeast 30 km/h gusting to 50 late this evening then increasing to 50 gusting to 80 overnight. Low 21.

Saturday's forecast calls for rain at times heavy ending near noon then clearing. Amount 30-40 mm. Wind Southeast 50 km/hr gusting to 80, increasing to 70 gusting to 110 then becoming Southwest 50 gusting to 80 late in the morning. High 22.

The outlook for Sunday is a mix of sun and cloud. Low 15. High 19.
