A 3 p.m. update from Environment Canada states that although hurricane Earl will be a marginal category 1 hurricane at landfall, its wind field will be spread over a greater area.

Topics :
Lurcher and Browns Bank , Nova Scotia , New Brunswick , Bay of Fundy

An abnormally hot and humid air mass over the Maritimes will allow Earl to hold onto its tropical character. Water temperatures ahead of Earl are above normal by 2-4 degrees and have been persistently warm during the latter part of August. These two factors come into play in the intensity of winds reaching the province.

On its current track, Earl is forecast to make landfall in the vicinity of western Nova Scotia or the fundy coast of New Brunswick Saturday morning.

Broken branches and limbs, and downed trees are likely during the storm, resulting in downed utility lines and related power failures. There could be some damage to signage, roofing materials and cladding.

Gusts as high as 130 km/hr are possible. Hurricane warnings for Lurcher and Browns Bank are now posted. HIgh waves and pounding surf can be expected primarily along south and southeast-facing coastlines. The threat of storm surge flooding is not great for regions around the Bay of Fundy due to a run of neap tides. The greatest surge threat will be over southwest NS. Heavy rain, as much as 40 to 70 mm is forecast.

Hurricane Bill, which brushed Nova Scotia in late August 2009, was a category 1 hurricane.
