At its meeting last Thursday, Yarmouth town council approved a motion to purchase the Brown Street parking lot from the Yarmouth Development Corporation (YDC).

The motion approved by council was, “That the counter offer of the Yarmouth Development Corporation for the purchase of the Brown Street parking lot in the amount of $125,000 plus taxes and legal fees be accepted.”

Yarmouth Mayor Phil Mooney said the purchase should help to “clean up all of the expenses and the debts from the YDC and put those guys on a footing where they can reinvent themselves and come back in a stronger position than what they are right now.”

The mayor said with Hawthorn Street identified as a key area for the town’s downtown revitalization plan, it made sense for the town to gain control of the parking lot as one of its assets.

“So now we’re doing all the plowing, all the maintenance of all the parking lots,” said Mayor Mooney. “I think that’s an important piece of infrastructure and it’ll be good to keep it in the town’s hands.”
