Yarmouth Town Council has approved  a $65,000 advance from the town of Yarmouth to fund a heat recovery project that is expected to reduce fuel costs by as much as $75,000 a year at the Mariners Centre.

The new system would use a heat pump to raise the temperature of the hot water that is recovered from the ice-making process high enough to use for heating the facility.

The centre hopes to receive $254,000 in ACOA funding for the nearly $400,000 project. The Mariners Centre management board is asking the town and municipality to provide $65,975 each as a loan. In a memo to councils, management board chair Harold Richardson wrote that the board expects to be able to pay back the advance within two fiscal years of project completion.

It approved the request at a special meeting of council Thursday morning.
