(Posted at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 5) The Halifax Regional Police said late Tuesday morning they don’t have much to go on concerning the search for a missing woman and so they are relying heavily on the public’s assistance to locate 45-year-old Donna Lee Sweeny.

Sweeny – who lives in Dartmouth but is originally from Yarmouth County and has family and friends here who are concerned for her safety – has not been seen since noon on Sunday, Feb. 3. In an interview with the Vanguard shortly before noon on Tuesday, Feb. 5, Constable Pierre Bourdages said Sweeney’s whereabouts were still unknown.

The police have said they have no reason to suspect foul play, but they are concerned for her well-being.

“We are concerned because she has a medical condition that requires daily medications, which are not with her,” said Cst. Bourdages. “So we want to make sure she’s okay and that she has access to medication she needs before her condition deteriorates. Hopefully someone can shed some light as to where she went, or if she did disappear on purpose that she contact us and let us know she’s okay.”

The police have said that Sweeny left her Second Street residence in Dartmouth on foot to visit a friend on Lakecrest Drive, which is just a short distance away.

“It’s a very short walk, you’re talking a five or 10 minute walk at the most,” said Cst. Bourdages. “Unfortunately she left her residence around noon on Feb. 3 and we were only contacted in the middle of the night, early morning of the 4th, so more than 12 hours after. At the time there was a big snowstorm going on in Halifax, we got almost 25 centimetres. Although we had canine on the scene to try to follow a track, it was very hard because of the weather conditions.”

Sweeny was last seen wearing a black winter jacket and beige boots.

“We have checked with the friends were she was supposed to go, they have not heard from her, neither did any of the friends that the family knew about,” said Cst. Bourdages. “It’s uncommon, it’s out of the ordinary for her to first be gone, and secondly, not be in contact with the family.”

The police are requesting that Sweeny or anyone with information on her whereabouts call them at 902-490-5020. They have issued information to media in the hopes of spreading the word. On Facebook people living in Yarmouth have been sharing the information. A story published on our website yesterday was also shared to social media about 400 times.

“Unfortunately we don’t have much to go on so we do rely on the public’s help,” said Cst. Bourdages.

Meanwhile, the Halifax Regional Police issued a news release late Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 5, saying a woman named Patricia Angela Mahaney that had been missing since Jan. 30 has been located unharmed in Halifax.
