Fire damaged a boat Tuesday at the Chebogue River Aquatic Club and the blaze appears to have been deliberately set, police and the fire department say.

“It’s very suspicious,” said Staff-Sgt. Michel Lacroix of the Yarmouth rural detachment of the RCMP.

He described the boat, which was not in the water, as an “older cabin cruiser,” and said the fire seemed to have caused “severe damage” to the vessel, which reportedly was 12 metres long. It was under a tarp.

John Wainwright, acting fire chief with the Yarmouth Fire Department, said they received the call at 11:15 Tuesday night.

“We determined that it was a set fire and then we turned it over to the (RCMP) for investigation,” he said.

Staff-Sgt. Lacroix said police suspect a connection between the boat fire and two grass fires they responded to late Tuesday night. All three calls came within a span of about 45 minutes, he said.

Yarmouth firefighters responded to three calls for grass fires that night, Wainwright said.
