A vehicle travelling towards Yarmouth appeared to make contact with the shoulder of the road and then corrected over the centre line into oncoming traffic, according to the RCMP.
This vehicle was struck by an oncoming vehicle and two subsequent vehicles that were unable to avoid the first collision site.
The driver of the first vehicle was removed with assistance of the fire department and transported to hospital with facial and head injuries, along with two other people from two of the other vehicles.
Three vehicles were towed from the scene.
The investigation is continuing, RCMP say.
Conditions were bad at the time, with slippery roads and poor visibility.
