Fire destroys home on Lake George Road: UPDATED

Firefighters from Yarmouth and two other area fire departments coped with strong winds and a wind chill of -16 degrees Celsius Wednesday afternoon during a structure fire on the Lake George Road.

The fire was fully involved when firefighters arrived on the scene, with a hole on the north side already burned through the building. "We had a real difficult time with it because of the wind," said Yarmouth Fire Department platoon chief Rick Quesnel. Firefighters also had to cope with slippery conditions on the ground. Neighboring fire departments assisted with water shuttle.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Insurance adjusters are now dealing with the case.

Fundraising arrangements are underway for the owner of the home. More information will be published in the Jan. 12 issue of The Vanguard as well as on NovaNewsNow when it becomes available.
