A hazardous materials (hazmat) team and the fire department spent much of the day Monday, Jan. 4 cleaning up a fuel spill that occurred in Woodstock, Yarmouth County.
A spokesperson with the rural RCMP detachment, interviewed mid-Monday afternoon, said that the cleanup was going smoothly. The police were still awaiting a report to know how much fuel had leaked.
Corporal Karen Holmes said the incident occurred at 10:18 a.m. when a domestic home fuel truck began sliding on a slippery road. Although the fuel truck overturned there was never a point of impact and there was no injury to the driver. The incident occurred on a section of the Crosby Road, which Cpl. Holmes described as a private lane. She said there were no homes in the vicinity of the leak.
While there was initial concern about the Lake George watershed, Cpl. Holmes said the reports early on from the scene was that the fuel was contained and there was nothing to indicate any of the fuel had spilled into the watershed.
“It wasn’t a significant spill, but because there is fluid leaking out we call out hazmat and the fire department. They’ve contained it the best they can and hazmat is getting everything to soak up. They were out there relatively quickly,” she said.
Traffic on the road was controlled to allow emergency workers to clean up the spill and do environmental checks.
