Most people don’t think of locking their vehicles in their driveways.
But they should, is the message coming from the rural detachment of the RCMP.
And people should also refrain from leaving valuables in their vehicles.
The RCMP say there have been many recent cases of people stealing items from unlocked vehicles in people’s driveways. Cpl. Karen Holmes says they’ve received complaints from the Chebogue and Brooklyn areas.
She says if people don’t lock their vehicles and put away their valuables, then they are creating a “crime of opportunity” for someone else.
Items that have been stolen from people’s vehicles have included iPods, cash, a purse and a satellite radio. In one case, someone even stole a diabetic kit.
If people are also leaving their homes unlocked when they’re not at home, they should definitely be locking their doors and windows, says Cpl. Holmes.
While people like to think that their valuables are safe in an unlocked vehicle or home, the sad reality is that’s not the case.
