West Nova MP Robert Thibault issued his second apology in less than a week today for statements he made that caused some controversy.
Thibault, a Liberal, suggested in a newspaper story that if the Conservatives were serious about beating him in the next election they would find someone younger than 60. West Nova Conservative candidate Greg Kerr, along with Conservative Senator Marjory LeBreton were quick to jump on the comments, suggesting they were ageist.
This lead to an exchange in the papers between Thibault and LeBreton with Thibault eventually being quoted as saying "Marjory should go back to making tea for Brian Mulroney and say out of serious people's business" and calling her and "idiot."
Not surprisingly, this lead to an outcry from people suggesting Thibault's comments were sexist and hindered the advancement of women in politics.
Thibault said it was not his intention for the comment to be taken as gender-specific and said he's worked hard to advance and promote the role of women in politics. He said the earlier comment about age was intended to refer to Kerr only and not seniors in general.
