Rodney MacDonald stepped down as Tory leader on Wednesday.
Karen Casey, who served as ministers of education and health in the MacDonald government, and who is the MLA for Colchester North, has been chosen to serve as interim Tory leader. She becomes the first woman to lead the party until a leader is officially chosen to replace MacDonald.
No one has stepped forward to say they are running for the party leadership, although Yarmouth MLA Richard Hurlburt’s name has been thrown around as a possible contender.
MacDonald’s announcement that he is stepping down as leader comes two weeks after the Conservatives fell from the party governing the province, to the party in third place in the Legislature following the NDP majority win on June 9.
He has indicated he will stay on as MLA for Inverness.
