Matt Green led the way with a gold and Robert Nelson and Ashley Ring each brought home silver.
Green won all three of his matches, Nelson won two of three and Ring took three of four.
Green and Nelson are in Grade 12 at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School and Ring is in Grade 11.
Braiden Warner, who attends Maple Grove Education Centre, also took part in the provincials, placing fifth in his category.
Rick Card, who coaches the local wrestling team, says it was a great weekend for the Yarmouth contingent.
“Over 300 wrestlers from across the province were there, the best athletes in the province,” he said. “To have them (the competitors from Yarmouth) do as well as they did was fantastic.”
Regarding the state of wrestling locally, Card says it’s a popular sport.
“The schools are starting to do it in the phys-ed programs, so there’s an increase in popularity, but it’s difficult to bring the kids into the team part of it,” he said. “We’re competing with basketball and hockey.”
Indeed, the Yarmouth wrestling team is smaller than it was a few years ago, but Card hopes to see an upswing in the numbers.
“I’m hoping to rebuild the team to what we had before,” he said.
