Hockey Nova Scotia has awarded 11 of 12 franchise teams for the Nova Scotia Major Bantam League (NSMBL).
Next season there will no longer be bantam AAA teams in the province, including here in Yarmouth. This level of hockey is being replaced by the major bantam teams. It’s expected around the province individual hockey associations will have bantam AA, A and/or B teams.
“We are extremely pleased with the quality of bids that were submitted for this league. Hockey Nova Scotia is confident that the franchisees selected will be excellent organizations and members of the NSMBL,” said Laurie Carr chair of Elite Hockey.
The teams were selected after undergoing a bid process and will being operating for the 2010-2011 hockey season.
The team franchise list is as follows:
•Western region (which takes in Yarmouth): team name – Western Hurricanes. The home arenas for this team will be the Barrington arena, Bridgewater arena and Chester arena.
•Cape Breton: team name – Breton Sport and Trophy Cougars
•Strait Region (including Antigonish and Canso): team name – Major Bantam X-Men
•Pictou County: team name – Pictou County Crushers
•Cole Harbour/Eastern Shore: team name – Cole Harbour-Eastern Shore Bombers
•Dartmouth: team name to be announced
•Bedford: team name – Bedford Barons
•Halifax: team name – Halifax Major Bantam Hawks
•TASA/Chebucto: team name – Bay Gulls
•Sackville/East Hants: team name –Newbridge Academy Senators
•Nova (valley): team name – Kings Mutual Valley Wildcats Bantam AAA Hockey Club
•Fundy team franchisee to be determined
