Three days after what would have been Steve Brewer’s 54th birthday, a basketball tournament in his memory opened at Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School.

A local resident who was killed in a car accident last winter, Brewer was known to many people for his longtime involvement in basketball. Organizers hope to make this memorial tournament an annual event.

Held Dec. 27-29, the tournament featured a junior high school boys division and a senior high girls one and Yarmouth teams were triumphant in both.

The boys were on the floor first.

The YCMHS junior team opened the boys portion of the event Thursday with back-to-back victories – a 62-19 win over Saint Mary’s Bay Academy, followed by a 69-35 victory over Maple Grove.

On Friday, the Yarmouth team – whose roster includes Steve Brewer’s son Keenan (player of the game in the win over Maple Grove) – won their third straight game and captured the tournament championship by defeating Lockeport 87-24.

Anthony Oguntade and Josh Adams were Yarmouth players of the game against Saint Mary’s Bay and Lockeport, respectively.

Yarmouth’s Will Devine was the tournament’s most valuable player and teammate Grayson Smith was a tournament all-star.

Maple Grove’s Austin Thibeau also was chosen as a tournament all-star.

The senior girls began their portion of the tournament Friday afternoon, after the junior boys had finished theirs, and the YCMHS girls opened play by defeating Shelburne 76-49. Samantha MacDougall was Yarmouth’s player of the game and Allie Berry (who later would be named MVP of the senior girls tournament) was the YCMHS all-star for the game.

Next for Yarmouth, it was a 61-49 win over Middleton. Chelsea Surette was player of the game for the Vikings and Samantha MacDougall was Yarmouth’s all-star for the game.

On Saturday afternoon, Yarmouth made it three for three in the tournament by defeating Lockeport 58-47. Maggie Trask was Yarmouth’s player of the game in this one and Olivia Fells was the game’s all-star for YCMHS.

Yarmouth’s Allie Berry was named the most valuable player of the senior girls tournament and Maggie Trask was presented the sportsmanship award named in memory of Steve Brewer.
