The Special Olympics Nova Scotia Provincial Winter Games are back in Yarmouth this weekend, with things slated to kick off officially Friday at 5 p.m., when the opening ceremony is held at the Mariners Centre.

About 325 athletes and coaches are expected to gather in Yarmouth for the games, which will feature floor hockey, curling, figure skating and bowling. Earlier this week, given the terrain and weather at the time, organizers had announced that the snowshoe competition could not go ahead and would be replaced with bowling.

Frank Grant, the contact person for games volunteers, recently said things seemed to be falling into place for a successful event.

Plenty of people have stepped up to help put on the games, he said.

“Very good support, probably over 100 volunteers,” Grant said. “It’s been a really good show of support. It should be a great weekend.”

And it will all start with Friday’s opening ceremony, which Grant says won’t be long, given that some of the competition will start that same evening.

The Mariners Centre will be the focal point of most games-related activities.

Grant says organizers hope everyone will be up for the games and that they will make the participants feel at home. Grant says it would be great, for example, for businesses to use their marquees to greet the athletes and the people with them.

“It’s always nice when visitors come in and they feel extra welcome,” he said.

This is the second time the games are held in Yarmouth. They were held here in 2009.
