Trysten Deveau

Clare’s Trysten Deveau (karate) joins theMary Fay Curling Team, Ryan O’Neil (karate) and Bradley Keeping-Myra (figure skating) in being named Sport Chek Team/Athletes of the Month for January.

Sixteen year-old Trysten Deveau returned home to Church Point from the Canadian National Karate Championship with a first place finish in the junior (16-17 years) female kumite division -53kg.  Deveau’s win qualifies her for the Junior National team and she will be eligible to attend the Pan American Championships. Deveau was selected as January’s Sport Chek Female Individual Athlete of the Month.

Ryan O’Neil receives the honor of being named January’s Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month. The 17 year-old Halifax athlete won gold in two divisions at the Canadian National Karate Championships in Richmond, BC. O’Neil competed in the juniors (16-17 years) male kumite -68kg and under 21 -68kg divisions. O’Neil’s win qualifies him for the Junior National team and will be eligible to attend the Pan American Championships.


The Male Team Athlete of the Month award goes to 15 year-old Bradley Keeping-Myra of the St. Margaret’s Bay Skating Club. Myraand his novice dance partner Ashlynne Stairs  finished fifth overall at the 2014 Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships.  The pair were seventh in the free dance segment, posting a score of 51.91. They had a 24.19 in pattern dance.  That gave the pair a total score of 76.10, good for a fifth place finish.

The Mary Fay foursome who curls out of the Chester Curling Club placed third overall at the Canadian Junior Championships in Liverpool, NS. The team includes skip Mary Fay of Chester, third Jennifer Smith of Berwick, second Karlee Burgess and lead Janique LeBlanc - three 15 year-olds and a 16 year-old. To reach the medal round the team qualified first in the women’s ‘B’ pool against six other teams. The team receives the title of Sport Chek Team of the Month for January from Sport Nova Scotia.

The Sport Chek Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
