Mariners Split Weekend Series With Western Capitals

The Yarmouth Mariners downed the Summerside Western Capitals at home on Sunday in what was probably the strangest ending to a Mariners game on home ice.

With 3:32 left in the third period, and the Mariners up 5-2, Summerside had to forfeit the game because they had run out of players to put on the ice due to players being in the penalty box or in the dressing room as a result of game misconducts.

Summerside had come to Yarmouth with a short bench to start with – just 13 players – and by the end of the third period they had more coaching staff than players on the bench. Much of this was due to player misconducts that were handed out to both teams at 12:19 in the third period when a slew of fights broke out on the ice. When Summerside forfeited they also had three players in the penalty box and were having to play the last eight minutes or so of the game constantly shorthanded.

A recap of third period penalties is as follows:

YM, John Hubley "A", Hooking - Minor 1:01

Carl Hayes (powerplay) opened the scoring 43 seconds into the opening frame to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Will Johnston (powerplay) scored at 3:41 to tie the game at 1-1 after the first period. Neil Coombs scored at 1:56 to restore the lead for Yarmouth at 2-1. Robert Green (game winner) scored at 9:46 to extend the lead to 3-1. Denny (powerplay) scored at 13:42 to increase the lead to 4-1 after the second period. Johnston (second goal of game) scored at 8:02 to cut the lead in half at 4-2. Innes rounded out the scoring 1:09 later at 9:11. Yarmouth went 2 for 12 on the powerplay while Summerside went 1 for 10. Alex Newman stopped 28 of 30 shots for the win while Paul Dorsey stopped 20 of 25 shots in the loss.

On Saturday the Mariners lost to Summerside 5-3.

These were the first home games for the Mariners since it was announced the team had been sold and bought by Mitch Bonnar and Keith Condon of Tri-Star Industries. Another notable change to the team was the return of head coach Laurie Barron.
