The Yarmouth Mariners had a decisive 8-2 win over the Pictou County Weeks Crushers on Friday, Dec. 14, at the Mariners Centre, with the Mariners scoring five of their eight goals in the second period.
Colin Campbell and Zack Henry led the Mariners with 1 goal and 2 assists each while Rodney Mahoney added 4 assists. Jon Johannesson collected 2 goals.
Connor Donaghey (Rodney Mahoney, Matt Tomah) opened the scoring on the powerplay at 17:07 to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Josh Desmond (Colin Campbell) scored 38 seconds into the middle frame to extend the lead to 2-0. Derek Larade (Travis Wilkins, Rodney Mahoney) scored the game winner at 6:50 to increase the lead to 3-0. Campbell (Zack Henry, Jared Hicks) scored at 8:05 to widen the lead to 4-0. Brandon Parsons scored at 16:24 to narrow the lead to 5-2. Jared Hicks (Henry, Campbell) scored at 18:09 to extend the lead to 6-2 after the second period.
Henry (Mahoney) scored a shorthanded goal at 4:34 to increase the lead to 7-2. Johannesson (Mahoney, MacSwain, second goal of game) rounded out the scoring at 13:58.
Yarmouth went 1 for 5 on the powerplay while Pictou County went 0 for 4.
Travis Wilkins stopped 30 of 32 shots for the win while Brandon Thibeau (29:26) stopped 22 of 27 shots in the loss before being replaced by Dylan Frank. Frank (30:34) stopped 14 of 17 shots he faced the rest of the game.
Saturday, Dec. 15, the Mariners play their last home game before the Christmas break when the team hosts the Woodstock Slammers. People attending the game are asked to bring a new, unwrapped gift for the Salvation Army as part of the Mariners toy drive.
Meanwhile, the Mariners sit in second place in the Eastlink Division, tied in points with the Truro Bearcats with 43 points. Truro has a record of 20 wins and 3 losses and the Mariners have a record of 21 wins and 5 losses.
