The Amherst Ramblers had done the Yarmouth Mariners a favour by defeating Truro twice over the past week, but the Ramblers didn’t do the Mariners a favour when they came to the Mariners Centre on Friday, Feb. 1.

Trailing 2-1, the Ramblers pulled their goalie in the final minute of regulation play for the extra attacker and scored the tying goal with 10.1 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

With neither team scoring during the five-minute overtime the game went into a shootout, with Amherst’s Maxime Richard being the only player to score in the shootout, giving Amherst the 3-2 win.

Brandon Bussey (Josh Desmond, Jared Hicks) had scored on the powerplay at 4:57 in the first period to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead. Former Yarmouth Mariner Brock Morrison scored at 11:44 in the second period to tie the game for the Ramblers.  Paul Lamoureux (Matt Wright, Derek Larade) scored at 3:35 in the third to regain the lead for Yarmouth at 2-1.

Amherst’s goal with 10.1 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime was scored by Maxime Richard, who had the tying goal and winning goal of the game, earning him first star of the game.

In the shoot out, goal attempts by Colin Campbell, Zack Henry and Brandon Bussey were all turned away.

Amherst went 0 for 4 on the powerplay while Yarmouth went 1 for 4. Richard Tingley stopped 34 of 36 shots for the tie, while Travis Wilkins stopped 29 of 31 shots in the tie.

Yarmouth still picked up a point for the tie in regulation play. After Friday night’s games in the MHL Yarmouth still sat in first place in the Eastlink Division with 60 points, compared to 58 points for the Truro Bearcats, who had the night off on Friday. Amherst sits in third place in the division with 57 points.

Yarmouth, which has 29 wins and 8 losses this season, hosts Miramichi on Saturday evening, Feb. 2. Truro plays Pictou.
