The Yarmouth Scotia Garden Mariners won their first round of provincial playdowns by defeating Western Valley in two games in a best-of-three game series.
The series win means that Yarmouth advances to the second and final round of provincial playdowns, which will see the Mariners play a four-team round robin. The two teams with the best record will advance to atom A provincials in March.
Yarmouth’s first win over Western Valley was a 7-3 win at the Mariners Centre on Feb. 2. Tristan d’Entremont and Donovan Mullen each had a pair of goals. Also scoring were Brenna Verran, Yanick Cottreau and Nolan MacDonald.
Adding a pair of assists each were Yanick Cottreau, Brenna Verran, JJ MacPhee and Caelen Wallace. Also contributing assists were Denver d'Entremont, Justin Surette, Landon Clayton, Tristan d'Entremont and Gavin O'Connell.
Goalie Liam White had the win in net.
In Bridgetown on Feb. 3 Yarmouth defeated Western Valley 6-3. Scoring were Donovan Mullen (2), Brenna Verran, Tristan d’Entremont, Justin Surette and Nolan MacDonald. Yanick Cottreau added three assists and Denver d’Entremont and Brenna Verran each had one.
Goalie Charlie Banks was in net for the win.
Two teams from the Western Nova Minor Hockey League’s atom A division advance to the second round of provincial playdowns. Moving on with Yarmouth from the league is South Shore, which won its playdown series against Chester. Two city teams from the Central league will also be involved in this provincials qualifier.
Atom A provincials will be held March 15 to 17 in Sydney, Cape Breton.
