The Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School Grade 9 boys’ basketball team is the western region’s junior high champion.
The Vikings defeated Kings Edge Hill 53-38 in the Feb. 27 championship game of regionals, which was hosted by Yarmouth, who had won districts a week earlier. Regionals are the highest level of competition at the junior high level.
Kings Edge Hill had led in the first quarter of the championship game, at one point with a 19-10 gap. But the momentum shifted to Yarmouth’s side and by the end of the first half the score was 24-22 in Yarmouth’s favour. With just over four minutes left to play in the third quarter both teams were tied 30-30 but Yarmouth pulled ahead 38-30 heading into the last quarter.
Yarmouth had advanced to the championship game after defeating Bayview of Mahone Bay earlier in the day. Kings Edge Hill had defeated Annapolis to advance to the championship game.
In the consolation game it was Bayview over Annapolis.
