Switzerland advances to semi-final against Team USA with a 4-1 win over Russia

Team Switzerland has advanced to Friday's semi-finals after defeating Russia 4-1 in the first of two quarter-final games at the Mariners Centre on Thursday night as part of the World Junior A Challenge.

The Swiss will play Team USA in Friday's semi-final with the winner advancing to Sunday's gold medal game.

The Switzerland-Russia game saw a scoreless first period and Switzerland leading 1-0 after the second period.

Switzerland then extended its lead further by scoring three more goals in the third period.

Russia's lone goal came with 38.1 seconds remaining in the game.

The second quarter-final game at 7:30 p.m. sees action between Canada East and the Czech Republic. The winner of that game will play Canada West in the semi-final Friday night for the chance to advance to the gold medal game.
