HALIFAX, NS – A new cafe in Halifax has been named after one of Digby County’s most spectacular natural landscapes – Balancing Rock.
The Balancing Rock Coffeehouse was opened within the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront hotel in June 2017.
Jessica Muzzerall is the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, and said the name was chosen to follow the stone theme the hotel has used in other food outlets, including the harbourstone Sea Grill and Pour House, and the Stone’s Throw patio restaurant.
“This is the most famous rock in Nova Scotia, so the decision was an easy one,” she said.
Going to the cafe’s namesake
The cafe’s only literal connection to the Balancing Rock hike in Tiverton is its name, but its staff members are well versed on its wonders.
The hotel insisted each employee take part in a group trip to Tiverton to see the famous basalt rock column for themselves, and for good reason.
“We get asked about it all the time,” said Muzzerall.
“Our logo is also a picture of the rock, and when tourists find out it’s a real place, they really want to go.”
Repping Nova Scotia’s wonders
Evan Starratt works at the cafe and has answered many customers’ questions about the rock.
“People are often on short trips, and want to know if they can make a quick trip down. I always tell them it’s about four hours, but that it’s totally worth the driving time,” he said.
“When you walk down over the bluff and feel that fresh breeze on your face, it’s the most refreshing feeling.”
Muzzerall is feels proud that the cafe is named for such a raw beauty.
“This allows us to brag about Nova Scotia’s beautiful landscapes – Digby County in particular,” she said.
“It’s a constant topic of conversation here, which is just awesome.”
