DIGBY COUNTY, NS – Eastlink is now offering fibre-optic, high-speed internet to customers in the urban centres of Digby and Clare municipalities.

Claudine White, Director of Sales and Marketing for Eastlink’s Maritimes region, announced the initiative, called Gig Internet, on October 25.

The initiative is called Gig Internet, and offers internet at a speed of 940 gigabits per second, or gbps, at a cost of $149.95 per month.

Bell Aliant also provides high-speed, fibre-op internet in town of Digby, but not in Clare. While this new speed may only be available in urban areas, regular fibre-optic high speed internet at a speed of 400 gbps is available in communities like Bear River, Plympton, Weymouth, Belliveaus Cove, Saulnierville, Comeauville, Church Point and Meteghan.

“We’re excited to offer this to both municipalities, and consider our partnerships with rural areas vital ones,” said White.

As broadband internet usage has jumped 40 per cent in the past year alone, more people are becoming connected than ever.

The plan will not offer the new high-speed option to areas like Long Island and Brier Island, but White says the company is always open to partnership proposals from communities.

Eastlink also has yet to offer internet plans for lower income households. White said this, as well, is never off the table.

“We always tell people to contact their MLA, who can then contact one of our chief engineers, to start a conversation on what high speed connectivity could look like in their community,” she said.

The exact areas of coverage under the new plan were not specified. Anyone interested can contact Eastlink at its Digby location, located at 88 Warwick Street, or by phone at 1-888-345-1111.
