Addressing the Yarmouth and Area Chamber of Commerce during its annual general meeting, Don Bureaux said, “I’ve felt a big difference in this town, this area, the past few years in terms of the buzz, in terms of the energy.”
Bureaux spoke of how the NSCC is making its mark – through initiatives like ocean research, for instance – and he cited a number of examples of NSCC grads making their own mark with successful businesses and careers in various fields.
Whether it’s a small business with only a few people in a rural community or something as big as a multibillion-dollar shipbuilding contract in the city, Bureaux said he finds there’s a spirit in Nova Scotia that suggests the province is moving in the right direction.
Speaking again of the local area, he said, “The spirit that I’m experiencing, that I see, in the Yarmouth area is dramatically different (from what it once was). And I think, together, the narrative that you’re reshaping in this community can be a model.”
Bureaux’s March 9 presentation at the Rodd Grand Hotel followed the business portion of the Yarmouth chamber’s AGM.
The evening’s formalities included the swearing in of Neil Rogers as the chamber’s new president. He succeeds Chris Atwood.
Rogers emphasized the importance of getting young people involved, saying these are the business and community leaders of the future, a point shared by Bureaux, the evening’s guest speaker.
Bureaux also said a chamber of commerce is more than just an organization representing the business community.
“I see the work of a chamber not only being the voice of business but providing hope and inspiration for everyone in our community,” he said, “so I want to applaud you for that.”
Referring to the role of the NSCC, meanwhile, he told his Yarmouth audience, “Don’t forget. This community college belongs to each and every one of you ... We are here to serve you, help you grow and prosper.”
