Sherry Robertson brought a sample fire starter brick press to the May 13 council meeting. The association is asking for $2,700 to purchase four more like it.

She had Water View Machine shop manufacture the tool for much less than those she saw during her research.

The new microbusiness would tie in nicely with one of their existing microbusinesses (shredding paper for local businesses). Currently the association pays the recycling depot to take the paper once it is shredded.

Mixing shredded paper with water and wax produces the eco-friendly firestarters/burners base. This is then pressed and placed on drying racks.

The finished product would be sold to campgrounds and at the Farmers’ Market.

“This is something that was really exciting for me to present to our staff and clients,” said Robertson.

“From start to finish, this is a job our clients can do. I think it’s something we can take pride in.”

In researching the product, Robertson said she had learned about one couple that used 400 bricks to heat their home for the winter.

Yarmouth Life Skills operates upstairs in a large warehouse on Hawthorn Street. The association provides a diversified day program for post school-age adults with intellectual and accompanying physical disabilities.

For the past eight years, it has striven to run meaningful, doable microbusinesses.

After the Christmas season this year their gift tag business was discontinued due to the lack of sales.

Forty-five per cent of Yarmouth Life Skills clients and their families reside in the Municipality of Yarmouth.
